OOOOOOOOOOH WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT
I go to check up on the Tikicon forums, because a local-ish artist was inquiring about programs and such and...I find this message on the forums from our con chair, Peter:
You really can't let the convention go on without David Prowse, Pete? Because, y'know, it's not like we don't have OTHER GUESTS that people may want to see. It's not like a lot of people even KNOW who David Prowse is (Angie, resident Star wars nerd, would you trek out of your way to see Prowse?). I know I didn't, that's for sure.
So, instead of OMG POSTPONING the convention, why not let it go on and focus on the dealers/artists?
And, FOR FUCK'S SAKE, why another Cleveland Tikicon?
WHY?
So............in reality Pete wants to move the con to Cleveland and is sort taking advantage of the fact Prowse has surgery to 'postpone' the convention. Now, see, Prowse has had medical issues since early this year (I believe, I'll double check that). On top of that, he's 74 YEARS OLD. One, who even knows who he is? Two, what has he been in aside from Star Wars that might be relevant. And, three, um...why not book younger/more relevant guests that will bring more people in?
Now, this is no slight against David Prowse. This is general conventioneering (I like to think I just made that word up). You bring in current big names or, at least, names people KNOW. Yes, they may cost a little more, but that's why you only have one or two. Instead of eight or ten B- or C-list actors.
On the topic of the Cleveland thing. I can understand wanting to do the convention in Cleveland. Technically, it's still pretty local (Cleveland is maybe an hour and a half drive on a bad day from the Niles/Warren area). Cleveland hasn't had a good covention in a long time. Colossal Con doesn't really count because it's not all that successful (in my eyes, I rarely hear it mentioned). Cleveland is a large city (for what it's worth) and sounds better to say that your convention is in a large metropolitan area instead of some little town in northeast Ohio.
HOWEVER. What the fuck is it with no one outside of Pete's 'inner circle' getting a heads-up on these things? We were told we'd have meetings every month AND we saw Pete and Dawn like, LAST MONTH (maybe the month before) and nothing was said about the possibility of things not happening this year.
Here's the full thread for anyone interested.

We unfortunately have to postpone the Niles Tiki Con for this year. We just received word that Dave Prowse will not be able to attend due to the hip replacement surgery he will be having in November. You may check out his website for more details. We did want to move forward but felt there was not enough time to replace him this close to the convention and that the convention would not be what you have come to expect from a tiki con. We are currently working on a Cleveland show in June and will keep you posted on all the details. We do apologize if this has inconvenienced anyone and will do our very best to make sure the June show is spectacular. Again we do apologize delaying the show was the last thing we wanted to do but, also feel it is the right choice at this time. Take care.

There's a lot of planning for a show and thousands of dollars invested in it and Pete does this for the fans and not to make a profit. He's not "screwing" anyone. TJChurch, You posted that the guestlist wasn't good enough for you anyway and you weren't coming. Well, you are backpeddling now since you have something else to complain about don't you? Angry Most of the time promoters take a hit and no one knows about it.
There are people in Cleveland who are willing to put up funds to help support a great show like this and since there's no local sponsors who want to, the show has options on where to go. If you want to continue to attend Tiki-Cons, why don't you help pass out flyers or post POSITIVE comments about this show like the many people Pete has helping him, myself included. These are VOLUNTEERS and do it because they LOVE being a part of a con and would love to see many more in this area.
Pete is a great guy and anyone who paid for tables will get their money back. He isn't about to "screw" anyone over in this family friendly environment. Bottom line, things happen and Mr Prowse's surgery could NOT wait any longer. I wish him a speedy recovery and can only wish that others can overlook this and continue to support Tiki Con.
