I left for work this evening. Walking through the parking lot, I felt something wet on the back of my jeans. I thought nothing of it, at first, assuming that water splashed ontop my pants.

However.

They kept getting wetter. I turned to check and see what was wrong and it turned out MY BAG IS LEAKING.

I toss my bag off and onto the ground, my first thought on the fact that I HAVE ART AND COMMISSIONS IN THERE. I pull out the offender, a bottle of Pepsi. Then I bolt into the house swearing and tossing things out of the bag in hopes of saving them within seconds.

Sketchbooks are fine. They got wet along the edges. Cell phone is fine, just wet. Wallet is a little wet, change purse is soaked, pencil bag is soaked.

Camera...is toast. It was at the very bottom and soaked up the brunt of the attack. I'm hoping the SD card is okay, it didn't look like it got much pop on it. I wiped it off and let it sit. It should be okay. Hopefully.

The camera is completely drenched. Soaked through. I tried turning it on when I pulled it out, nothing. I tried after drying it, nothing. I tried when I got home, after letting it sit. Nothing.

I've not completely dismantled it in hope of drying it out and getting all the internal bullshit cleaned and dry. I mean, there's not much else I can do wrong to it if it's dead anyhow, right?

Hopefully I won't be stuck shelling out $100 for a new camera. This also means, however, that, since I don't have a scanner and I don't have a camera, there will be no art until I get one or the other.

Lame.

Merry Fucking Christmas.

I'm trying not to let it get to me, but I'm really mad at myself for not double checking the pop before I put it into my bag. That was really, really stupid of me.

This may or may not help, as I've never personally had to clean soda from electronics...
But if it already doesn't work, this can't hurt.
Remove all batteries, cards, etc. Then rinse it with clean water (use bottled distilled if you can) and let it dry. Some of the sugar and other soda gunk might still be in there.
If that doesn't work, I dunno what to say. Colas use carbonic acid and I know that stuff isn't good for.. well... anything. But it's worth a try.

I wouldn't use water simply for fear of oxidization (sp?) instead i would pick up a bottle of rubbing alcohol and soak the thing in it for X amount of time then let it air dry somewhere the smell wont bother people.

Part of me is all 'is it SERIOUSLY safe to get water and alcohol all over the camera? won't that fuck it up more?' and the other part is like 'who cares, it's probably toast anyhow! you can't make it worse!!'.

Gah, I've had the same thing happen when I was in college. I lost art, school notes and luckily saved my Lord of the Rings dVD before it was too late...so I know how you feel. Blah soda truly can be evil. =\

i've had that happen! raspberry soda on a bag with white inside lining. terrrrible.

i have an old digital camera if you want. i mean old though. you have to duct tape the battery thing shut when you change batteries, and reset the time pretty much every time you turn it on. but it works. and the photo quality is fairly decent. i doubt you'd want, but i just got a new one so i figured i'd offer, at least :>
