Scarily enough, dongle is a technical term. A dongle is the wire that connects peripherals to main devices (like earphones to a walkman or a mouse to a computer). Most uses of it I've seen refer to the ones bent at a right angle.

If I remember right, Douglas Adams wrote an article on dongles, especially on the proliferation of dongles that don't work on international power setups.

I believe I remember that article. Specifically, it was about the trials and tribulations of how many adaptors and suchlike are required for anyone intent on travel.

Note to self: get a converter before going to Europe with laptop.

My impression of the word "dongle" is as an external attachment to provide specific internal functionality. For example, an encryption key which you plug into your printer or serial port, which then provides on-the-fly RSA or triple-DES encryption for your computer; or an ethernet loopback plug, for testing your network devices. Or even an extra video renderer.

But I suppose the term has been extended.
