I'm going to vent about my Drawing I teacher from the Trumbull branch.

Why? Because I got a Facebook invite for some matting thing he's doing for the art gallery in the mall. I don't know why, I dropped the class halfway through the semester.

BUT. Because it was a FB invite, I got his FB profile and, through there, his Flickr gallery.

How is it that this:

Equals art? There is no rhyme or reason to it. There is no sense, no meaning. Yeah, you could maybe give me 'chaos' or some shit, but....really. I look at that and see some swirly white paint on pink paint. Nothing special. At all. It's BLAND at best.

These, I can let slide. There's obviously some sort of work put into them, some sort of sense. I saw them in person and the background writing has a lot to do with love and molecules and shit.

The thing that pissed me off is that we all got the 'what does it mean to YOU' bullshit copout when we asked about them. No, fuck you. What does it mean to YOU, the person who MADE IT.

UGH.

Y'know what, I'm going to go out and buy some fucking canvas and throw some fucking paint on it and become famous. Because, apparently, learning new abilities and exploring new venues of art is just TOO MUCH WORK for some people who'd rather cop out with some French curves and splatter paint.

I know, I KNOW, art is different for everyone. I KNOW. But FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. People who do art like this seem to think that because it's so ~MYSTERIOUS~ and ~DEEP~ that they're better than everyone else and that makes me RAEG.

Jackson Pollock was a genius...

People who tried to copy him...not so much. LOL.

I feel the same way about Pollock's art, actually.

At least he put a lot of thought into it...but it was more mathematical than it was art, and he admitted that.

Then again, he also was a hopeless drunk and folded his Oldsmobile around a tree...so he could have just been not making sense.

I guess I should admit, my concept of art is really really broad too. And while I don't like most art, I still consider it art.

Yeah, I'll still consider it art. But that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Plus, it's more the attitude of most abstract/modern artists that pisses me off more than anything. However, pretension can be had by anyone in the art world. I'm certianly pretentious in some aspects.

I think the most pretentious people I've ever met have been painters and indie comic artists.

Speaking of which, I should get to Washington and punch Tucker in his face.

I guess I always get a giggle when people get into 'art wars' I went through art programs adamantly denying anything I ever did was art. And I still say that I suck balls at it. I'll let people keep their art, and I'll just stick to doodling.

I kind of hate it when abstract artists act like art that's pretty more accessible to the layman (and/or commercial art / graphic design / illustration) isn't really "art". I think it's really hypocritical.

I don't like that pink one. :C

The ones with the words make me want to know what they say, but otherwise, eh.

I did find one I liked in the gallery:

It reminds me of a travel map and those circles make me think of coins. Mony and travel, HA, two things I like and its on a dark background.

Stare at this one for a few moments and tell me if you see something, uh, questionable jump out. XD

I'm thinking that's the point of this type of art, but its hit or miss on whether or not something can be interpreted by people. I really don't know. The pink one just irritates me, likely because I can't see anything in it at all. Its just. Pink. And white stuff. Granted, now it just makes me think of shallow people having sex. Yeah, this stuff can be irritating! XD

Yeah, if there's something hidden, that means that the artist put some sort of thought into it, some sort of meaning.

I just don't 'get' abstract art. I know that makes me sound like an uncultured twat to some people but I just am unable to wrap my brain around 99% of it. And the fact that every abstract artist I've met has been overly pretentious, well, that doesn't help my opinion.

ugh. i like a lot of abstract/non-figurative art. and, honestly, i like a few things in his flickr.

but, to me, those samples look like he just went, "oh, well pollock did it, so can i! 8D" but without the sense of composition that pollock had.

also, i dislike when people try to claim their art is meaningful, but it's all about "what it means to yooooou". well, no shit, it'll mean something different to everyone. that doesn't mean you can't at least allude to your thoughts at the time. i met a lot of people in my brief stint in art school that would make these types of paintings, and then look down on illustration as "meaningless", so i may be a little bitter. :x

That was part of the gallery he had up that we got to see. Honestly, I thought those were kind of neat. Then he gave the copout answer and I was like 'really'? I mean, even if the meaning behind them is something you don't really want to discuss, just say so. Then I'd be more interested in figuring out what the paintings mean.

I don't know, maybe I'm just hung up on ART + EMOTION or something. XD

I'm sort of on the fence with the meaning something different to everyone. Maybe it's because I spend a lot of time pouring over ym characters and their development and background and who THEY are that there's very few people who they would mean the same thing to as they mean to me, y'know? Maybe it's the difference between being an illustrator type artist and an abstract artist?

I guess, I don't know, I like it when people talk about their work and don't just give cop out reasons for it. It gives me the impression that they really don't care about it and, therefore, put little to no thought into the piece.

i guess i don't mean to say everyone has their own meaning for each piece of art, as much as they have their own... thoughts or feelings, i guess? even if a direct meaning is given, people are still going to have their own thoughts about it.

i think they should at least give some vague idea. i speak only for myself, but i'f i'm shown an extremely abstract piece and told to "come up with your own meaning!" then my 'meaning' is pretty much just going to be, "oh, that looks cool" or "that really doesn't look cool". at least a vague idea would be better, if it's something the artist doesn't want to talk about. just because it can be hard to extract a meaning with some art.

but you might be right, and that's the difference between someone who paints abstractly versus someone who paints figuratively. no idea; i don't think i could ever paint abstractly. XD
