I'm going to rant a bit about work.
I know. It's only been one day. And I have no complaints about co-workers yet or anything like that. Everyone there seems cool and laid back. A lot of joking and razzing goes on.
But, see, I came from one of the best stores in the company. And THE best store in our discrict. I kind of walked into the Niles store expecting the worst.
Now, I know things have to be done a little differently because we're there after the store opens at 8AM. But, even still, the Silverdale store could get things done in 4-5 hours. Unloading the truck, doing pulls, cleaning up, everything.
This store? Not so much.
One, the night begins with those of us who aren't unloading, to set up the floor for the night. We, apparently, also bowl. That means we have to mill around until pallets come out and then bowl those out. Now, I've no issue with bowling. It's easy and quick. But this setup is a little absurd. Especially when there's 10-20 minutes where there's NOTHING TO DO until a pallet comes out. When I walk onto the floor, I should have SOMETHING to do.
After going all over the store to bowl out pallets, we start up in Market. I was told to 'pick an aisle!'. No. This isn't how it works. You take the first empy aisle and you work it. Everyone has an aisle next to each other and we move down and take the next empty aisle as you finish. You don't grab a random aisle. This defeats the purpose of the 'wave'. I recall at least TWICE walking past an aisle that wasn't worked and seeing the aisles nearby worked and cleaned up.
NO. That is not what we do.
I feel like such a crazy bitch, but it's common fucking sense, people.
The wave is taken a little TOO seriously at this store, in my opinion. In Silverdale, there was someone in each softlines department, and someone in Baby. These people worked while everyone else did Hardlines. This worked well. When Softlines folks finished, they came to help everyone in Hardlines. Here? Not so much. Baby is done last, and whoever's available works on it. It's a little absurd. Especially when Baby is such an easy department. Hell, I got four carts full of merchandise done in less than an hour.
Speaking of the baby department. It's TWICE as big as the one in Silverdale. It dawned on my this is because of stupid, stupid teenagers popping out crotch beasts for welfare money. It disgusts me.
Anyhow.
AFTER this, which is a good hour or two after the store opens, we work on the remaining pulls. These should be done. With the freight from the truck. Done, done, DONE. Not milling around at the back of aisles after the store is open. I shouldn't have to sort through repack boxes and divide where everything goes. This should be done. I shouldn't have a cart full of things that DON'T EVEN GO ANYWHERE NEAR THIS DEPARTMENT. God, it's not hard to KNOW. YOUR. STORE. It's not. I swear.
I'm half tempted to talk to my Team Lead and make an offer to sort repacks while the truck is being done. I don't know if it'll go over well, but it'll help me learn the store better (everything's just a LITTLE off from the Silverdale store. we have a larger Market and a few other departments.) and it'll cut back on the fact that there's so much in the way of repacks and pulls lying about.
I may also suggest doing the pulls IN ORDER (Market, H&B, etc., etc.) instead of doing them at random and then having to wander all over the place to stock them.
Obviously, there's A LOT of things that could be streamlined. And, while I don't mind the extra hours (I was there for seven hours today, until 11AM), it's just so frustrating to see this....inefficent mess everywhere. It took us four hours to get the freight from the floor, roughly. And then two to do the pulls. :/
Upside, I can listen to my music. :D And, really, that's all I need.
I need to buy new khakis. I realized the only pair I have with pockets, the zipper likes to come down for no reason. Thankfully, my shirts are long enough to block this, in case it happens,. But they're also tight and uncomfortable. So, when I get a little bit of money, I'll trek to the thrift stores to find a more comfortable pair.
