So! The Furtopia forums were hacked within the last week. Who's the first group the admins blame? LOLFurries.

Also, Wikifur news article.
Quite frankly, I'm just pissed I can't seem to access the FTP outside of the website. :/

Furtopia members,
It is my unfortunate duty to inform you that the original forums that we all loved and enjoyed are now gone.
All is not lost, however. Your home is still here! We will NOT go away. Furtopia is still home to a fantastic group of caring individuals that will continue to survive and grow. We are currently in the process of building newer and better forums. We will also do our best to import the old database/messages (though members will, of course, need to reset their passwords).
We would like to put rumors to rest as we give cause to this situation. After all, the Furtopia forums have been home to many furs for many years; a community built upon the following primary tenants: fun, friendship, and respect.
Building these friendships is what made furtopia more than just a forum—it is a community—one of the oldest in the fandom. Countless furtopia members have donated considerable time and money to engage the betterment of the community, not to mention other charitable organizations.
Last week, Furtopia was attacked by the site "lolfurries." The forums were vandalized, the database scrambled, artists websites were defaced (these were moved and restored), and the hard-drive erased. Private information (including passwords and private messages) was also stolen, with sensitive portions re-posted on their forums in the interest of providing the lolfurry group amusement.
After three days of hard work, the site and server was rebuilt. Within hours, the hacker destroyed the site again using another security exploit.
It’s important to note that “Lolfurries” would not exist without furtopia. All of the lolfurry administrators were furtopia members at one time It was through this common interest that they met and decided to make their own spin-off community.
Despite the fact that furtopia was the primary factor that brought the lolfurries together, that hundreds of furs (other than themselves) use furtoipa for networking, planning, and social enjoyment, they saw fit to destroy the community in the interest of “self entertainment.” To say the least: their actions are a disappointing testament of their personalities.
Though Ikonboard was new when Furtopia first opened, these forums now lack the support needed to address these major security issues. Despite our site backups: if we were to restore the forums, there would be little to keep from being attacked and vandalized again.
In the mean time we will be setting up a temporary forum for our community to stay in touch with other furtopians as we quickly work ( http://forums.furtopia.org - when ready ). Expect these temporary forums to be running by the evening of March 3nd 2008. Feel free to stop in and show your support to your other furtopians during these hard times. We will get through this together!
Very best,
WhiteShepherd

MikaelGrizzly> Can you tell me just what the hell happened recently?
Ally> Forums were hacked. I don't know anything else.
MikaelGrizzly> I got jumped by Serra, called a lolfurry, a 4channer, flamer and basher, then he announced it's the last time I see him. It has something to with the forum hacking.
Ally> They're blaming LOLFurries. I don't know how true that is, however.
Ally> Yeah, I can see people are going to start bashing anyone who's a member of those forums.
* Ally is on there, as well. And 4chan. OH NOES.
fahx> :O
* Eth|sleep is now known as Eth
MikaelGrizzly> Heh, looks like everyone gets to get the blame except people responsible for backing up and security :)
Weisseman> the backups where destroyed as well apparently
Ally> I agree, actually. There's two parts to the blame here, as with most situations like this.
Ally> Here's the e-mail, if you haven't read it: http://community.livejournal.com/furtopia/6617.html
MikaelGrizzly> "fun, friendship, and respect."
MikaelGrizzly> *chokes laughing*
MikaelGrizzly> Okay, maybe it has changed for the past two years or so since my departure...

This site is on temporary (possibly permanent) suspention. I thought I made it clear that the fact that other people on here (including some of the admins) would condone stuff like vandalism did not sit well with me, at all. It is childsh to try and destroy someone else's hard work and the fact that everyone seemed to be supporting them makes me think this site existed for all the wrong reasons.
I was going to just leave things alone, but I come online today and the site in question is down, again. This could only lead me to believe the same person who was a member here is responsible, again, and obviously didn't take me seriously.
The only guarantee I can make is that this site will remain down until everything is made better. I don't frankly care how that is just that it happens in one way or another.

And, a response to Kada's post over on
Is it really necessary to lay the blame of these acts on an entire community?
Yes, it's true that most of the administrators of LOLfurries were at one time members of our own community. It's also true that most of these members were eventually forced to leave for one reason or another. But to default blame to their entire community without concrete evidence doesn't sit with me very well, at all. For all we know, the actions were done by someone who happened to be a member of their community. Nothing more.
And if you haven't recently, you might want to take a look at the LOLfurries website. You might be surprised at what comes up.

Date: 2008-03-02 11:37 pm (UTC)I also don't think WS should have blamed the lolfurries though the forum password info making it to lolfurries means at least one member was in on it..
my opinion those in on it should have taken the blame not the entire forum.

Date: 2008-03-02 11:41 pm (UTC)No, WS shouldn't have blamed all of LOL. And, even though it was one errant member of those forums, is doesn't mean everyone there was responsible.
