Anyhow!
We have thirteen squirming rat babies. How did we get thirteen squirming rat babies? See, TJ saw an ad on Craigslist (which is really a bad place for us...) where someone was getting rid of two big rat boys because their snake was no longer eating and the rats we simply taking up space and eating. They didn't want to have to leave them outside again, and were looking for someone to take them. Either for pets (because they had been handled as such while the snake decided not to eat) or as feeders. We figure, two boys, we can pair up with the big cage of rat men and it won't be a big deal. Especially if they're friendly.
We get there and they have a pregnant female. They bred the rats for the pinkies and fuzzies, which is cheaper than buying from the pet store. Understandable. But, with nowhere to keep her now she was going to have to go in the cage outside. And we pretty much couldn't see that happen. So we brought her home, they said she's probably pop in about a week. Okay, no problem.
We get home, I wash up the boys (they were given some pizza last night and had sauce in their fur! plus, they were grungy from being kept outside from the short while.), who took it pretty well. I took the girl out to wash her up, and TJ pointed out that she was bleeding on me. Ohshit. Either she's ready to have the babies NOW, or something is terribly WRONG. We put her back in the small cage and gave her some nesting, keeping an eye on her for awhile. She wasn't freaking out, and being very calm, so we went her being calm equals everything's okay.
I heard her popping 'em out last night, and this morning she has thirteen squirmy babies that PEEP ALL THE TIME. I want to change out her bedding, as there's blood on it, but I may wait a few days. She seems okay with us, but I don't want to wig her out.
Our agreement, as long as there's no fancy babies, they'll be going back to the snake owners. Or, we'll see about finding homes for all of them.
We named her Crêpe.
The other two are friendly, and seem to enjoy being held. We named them Walter (a brown hooded) and Pamcake (a pink-eyed white). Pamcake reminded me of Waffle, so we named him appropriately. Walter reminded us of Stanley, so we named him something distinguished. Walter's a bit shy, but after the bath, I really can't blame him.
So, that was exciting!
Also, hoping Bob doesn't flip out at this discovery. He said more rats are okay, as long as the apartment doesn't reek. I've been doing well on that (not good, as I've been sick and stressed lately, so sometimes scrubbing down a cage isn't my top priority). The new beasts are being kept in the far corner of the kitchen nook, so they're out of the way of our rats for the week they need to be quarantined before I can pair them up with the other boys. And the girl will just come out here in her own cage, once the week is up. And, yeah, the babies peep really loudly, but you can't hear it in the bedroom when the door's closed, and it's not really all that obnoxious overall. They peep when they can't find mommy, and they sleep otherwise.
In other news, TJ got her meds the other day. Thankfully. Her mom sent the package express and we weren't expecting it until Monday, but it showed up early.
...my credit card also came. c_c
Yeah, it's as scary to you as it is to me. I did put a little on it, because we needed some food and other small necessities. But I'm just simply going to keep up on paying some out of each paycheck and I should be able to keep myself level unless some horrible emergency happens. And it's only $500. I can't do much damage with that.
In other rat news, S'mores has an abcess on his neck. Where I can't reach it because he's so damn tiny and squirmy that he won't stay still and I don't trust myself to take the tweezers to him there without hurting him somehow. I /HOPE/ Mallow grooms it off and it heals alright. If it gets too nasty looking, we'll take him to the vet. I'm going to put antibiotic on it, so it doesn't get all nasty.
I spent the last two days cleaning some awful infection off of my computer. Had to run in Safe Mode most of the time, too. But it's clean now. That god. x_x
I also dowloaded Pink Floyd's The Wall, because I didn't have it in its entirety and I was talking about it with my mom the other day.
