"Erin killed a kitten."

Let me tell you the ways this comment is likely wrong. And let me tell you the story behind it.

Last year, Al had two outdoor cats that hung around his house. Smokey, Mr. Cat. This later became four with the addition of Sherbet and Ms. Kitty. Smokey was not fixed (we think Ms. Kitty is, because she's not had babies thus far). We kept telling him and telling him, 'get her fixed. get her fixed.' and then OH! babies. Not fucking suprising.

Smokey's cats are almost cat-sized now (meaning they're pretty much adults) and they roam around Al's place with the other cats.

Now, Erin and Goldie (Al's beloved retriever/chow mix) have a fenced in portion of the backyard for themselves. A few months back, they had another dog, Lady/Michelle, who passed away suddenly for no reason. A cat turned up dead in their part of the yard awhile back and the first dog blamed was Lady. Then Erin. We were asked if Erin had ever killed a cat. Uh, no. She likes cats. She's lived with cats most of her life.

Fast forward to today, where I get a call that 'Erin killed a kitten'. To which I roll my eyes. Karen agreed with me that Al's blaming Erin because, god forbid, Goldie's a saint. Erin's a very submissive and passive dog. When she's yelled at, or when she thinks she's being yelled at, she reacts appropriately. This, of course, makes Al assume that Erin's the culprit no matter what. Goldie, on the other hand, never gets yelled at. So she reacts how she reacts, mostly with indifference.

So, of course, in all of Al's infinite wisdom, asking the dogs if they killed the kitten (in and angry voice, I'm sure) is the surefire way of finding out who killed it. Because, of course, Erin is going to act how she acts when she's yelled at and Goldie's not going to care because she never gets yelled at and doesn't realize that she may or may not be in trouble.

In short, Al's on the warpath and Erin 'needs to go back to Rob's'. Yes. Because, if she could still stay at Rob's, she obviously wouldn't be at Al's. I did talk to Rob, however, and he said they can probably take her for a bit. And then, if another kitten turns up, we know who the culprit is.

Regardless of whatever happened to the kitten, even if Erin did kill it, it was likely not done viciously or means that she hates cats. She could have been defending her territory, her and Goldie could have killed it, she could have gotten overzealous playing with it and hurt it. Without someone witnessing the event, no one knows what happened.

I, personally, think the kitten should've been smart enough not to go back by the dogs. The other cats do a fine job of avoiding them.
