I've been doing FAR too much computer research tonight.

I can't seem to run any virus scanners (even the online ones) without the computer rebooting (which doesn't really help them to find a possible virus that could be causing that very problem). And everything I search for that the lovely BSOD gives me goes absolutely nowhere.

But I'm pretty sure I need to find updates for all my drivers and shit.

Although, it's getting to be so much of a hassle that I think I may just reformat once we get the new computer.

Also, I read somewhere in my message board excursions that the STOP 0x0000007E error means a bad hard drive and the 0x0000008E error means a bad memory module. Or something. Anyone know for sure, I'm so tired of looking at numbers. If the bad hard drive thing is true, it may be the source of the problem. Simply because, when we were running Windows 98, we didn't even know we had this second hard drive. When we reformatted back in Janurary, we discovered it. It originally had Linux as the OS on it, too. So I'm wondering if whoever tossed this beast together just didn't remove ir or forgot about it or something. But it seems pretty likely, as the computer wasn't being THIS horrid before we installed XP and put the previously unknown hard drive into order.

But, either way, I'm seriously considering going back to 98. This machine just isn't ready for XP and, hell, we NEVER got a virus until we installed XP. I'm just tired of fighting with it. I'll find a solution for all of a month and then I'll be up half the night troubleshooting every little thing I can think of. And I can't even go kamikaze on things I think shouldn't be on the computer, because I don't want to lose anything. So I just have to suck it up and deal with it.

The new computer can't come fast enough...

I still can't believe I can be on AOL and surfing sites like DeviantART and the computer doesn't reboot, but I try to scan it for viruses and spyware and it crashes and burns. Augh.

At least we have a new battery on the motherboard.

the random restarts is probably bad RAM.

Do you know if you have more than one stick of RAM in there? and what kind?
give a run down of the specs of this one.

O.o My usual fixer in this sort of situation is just to save what I can and wipe the hard drive. But most of my important stuff is saved to CDs already, so...guess this would be last resort for ya. :)
