Okay, so I thought getting more RAM would help the computer. It did. For all of one day. Apparently, it's taken the sadistic pleasure of simply crashing at random for no apparent reason. I could just be staring at the screen and boop! Blue Screen of Death. Giving me the same shit about the memory and the drivers and shit. When nothing new has been installed on the computer.

I can be running one single program and it'll find a reason to reboot. And I was doing an oekaki today, which I can normally do as long as it's one of only a few programs open (normally AOL and AIM are up by default) and I got halfway done with it and the computer decided to crash. Lovely. Luckily, I saved the inkwork of it, so I can color it on my own time.

I really can't figure out what the hell is wrong with the computer now. I think, when we get the new computer, I'm going to either reinstall 98 on this one (cause it actually WORKED. Not like XP, which we don't have the power to run on this comp.) or re-partition the drives. OR, simply reformat the fucking bitch again.

I'm going to kill something. >_

Hrm. Would one of my spares work? It's a P2-300 and lacks a AGP slot, granted, but these IBMs are pretty damn solid machines.

I've got no idea. I just wish I could figure out what's wrong with this one. :P TJ and Rob both mentioned something about the BIOS battery? Damned if I know anything about that, but could that be something that might cause a problem? I know if affects the clock on the computer, and this clock has NEVER been set correctly. When we boot it up every day, we have to reset the clock to the correct time. But other than that, I'm at a loss for what's wrong. :P

wanna know a quick fix?
When your computer boots, click on the start button, and go to RUN. type in MSCONFIG.
Then, a window will appear, and you'll see all these tabs. Click on the one that says STARTUP. uncheck EVERY box. then restart.
That should free up A LOT of memory when you boot.
[your random reboot thing sounds a LOT like a spyware, or virus. I had that happen to my computer allot at my old house. The programs I use are Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware & Spywareblaster. ^0^]

And about your clock resetting- well, if you don't have a virus, you might have to change the battery on the motherboard.
That's actually REALLY easy- all you do is open up the case of your computer, and look at the motherboard. If you look over it, you'll see a HUGE flat hearing-aid batter. All you need to do is replace that- and that might help you with your clock problem.

[the reason why it could be bad, is because that little battery keeps the correct time and all your settings when your computer is unplugged. It won't boot/run right if your battery is bad.]

Seriously, if you ever need ANY computer help, give me a call and i'll walk you through stuff to do!! Getting more ram is a good thing- but definately not the answer :P

Glee. You're such a help. We've been thinking it's the battery for awhile now, but never knew what to do with it. I'll check some it out this tonight and make sure I can find what I need and hopefully I'll get something working right! :P

:D
i'm glad i can help you out some.
Honestly, the battery is REALLY easy to replace. Just open it up to take a look at the motherboard. Then you'll know what that bigass squished batter looks like X3 It's really so simple to replace. And until you can run to radio shack to get a new one- run that MSCONFIG trick, it should help out some!

Picked up a battery, and, well, there's gotta be a virus on the comp somewhere cause the battery route didn't work (but we needed one anyhow. :P). Unfortunately, the computer crashes when I run Spybot. :/ I've got a couple other virus scanners I'll have to reinstall and try, though. :P

Well, from what you said about that clock, a battery was a definate.
And yes, that random rebooting is DEFINATELY a virus. I had the same thing on my old computer :P
What virus scanner do you use? You can also go to www.symantec.com and do an online virus scan [if your computer will run it.]
Usually that MSCONFIG trick disables the virus at first- or makes it start slower, giving you a minute to get the upper hand.

I use McAffee, their service has improved LOADS since i first started using them. [they now stop them from getting ON your computer- v.s. them downloading, and then deleting.]

But if I were you, this is how I would handle my PC.
+ First, i'd do that MSCONFIG trick and restart.
+ I'd run my Anti-Virus program. [if it shut off during the run, i'd probably do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete and check the task manager to see if i could find the name of a "suspicious" process. If i did, i'd do a google search on it- and see what it is and if i could remove it manually.]
+ Then download Ad-Aware and run that next.
+ Download and run Spybot.
+ Download and install SpywareBlaster, and immunize my computer.
+ Then download ZoneAlarm and configure that sucker so my computer turns into Ft Knox. ^-^

I hope you get an idea off that- if you understand X3 it's a lot of info.
Reformatting is a LAST resort as always for me. [even though that is an almost 100% fix. but then you've got to install those programs to KEEP it fixed.] but yeah o_o; if you have any questions, feel free to ask :D
god i'm on the computer so much now that i'm working at UWC X3
