I have a question.
Have there every been any civil and sane social justice armchair crusaders? Because I'm beginning to think there isn't. Y'know, I would probably be more give-a-shit about your great interbutts causes if you didn't flip shit about things, slather your arguments with swears, and throw out all your bullshit label cards.
Because, quite frankly, I don't give a shit what you label yourself as. That doesn't matter to me in the conversation or in my judgment of your character. I don't care if you're transgender, bisexual, asexual, white, black, male, or female. If you're being a dumbshit on the internet, I'm calling you out only on the words you're putting on the screen. I know this must be a really hard concept to grasp because I, obviously, come off as such a hateful, bigoted person when I say that you having a conniption over the term 'genderswap' in fandom and fanfiction. I mean, I must be some crazy conservative cisgendered middle class Caucasians person who's been locked in a house for their whole life, never experiencing the outside world to be able to form judgments and assessments on other peoples' opinions, complaints, and words.
Seriously, all that ever comes up with these people is bile when you disagree with them in any manner. Having a different opinion than someone is an execution order. I'm so goddamn sick of it. Listen, if I want to use 'genderswap' instead of your bizarre terms (like 'assigned-differently-at-birth'), that's my pergoative. Also, using 'genderswap' is not the same, nor is it as offensive (or offensive at all, in my opinion. yes, I know sex and gender are different things, but fandom is pretty dumb overall, so expecting sense out of them is slim to none) as using terms like 'slutswap', 'niggerswap', 'spicswap' because, GUESS WHAT, those aren't actually things. And if they are, people KNOW they're offensive and they keep them out of your precious little sight.
Because, GOD FORBID, someone not but a trigger warning on something as petty and small as GENDERSWAP. God forbid someone shield your tender, baby eyes from things with your precious ~~trigger warnings~~.
Also, almost all conversations with these people that actually end usually result in them going 'lol you're a douchebag' or something and not actually coming to a conclusion. Which is pretty typical of people who are just spewing rage all over in a self-righteous manner because they think they're important on the internet.
Listen, I GET that some words are offensive and everyone is offended in a different manner. But the internet does not have a filter and, quite frankly, I don't want it to have one. When you start facing these horrible trials and terms in real life, then is the time to get up in arms. It's still not going to affect me much because I still don't know you personally. The only people I'm fighting for are my friends and family and otherwise, I'm going to dick around on the internet and spend my free time having fun instead of getitng into a tizzy over words on the internet.
You're not here to police what I say and I, as a human adult, know to take responsibility for what I say and do. If I call someone a slur, there's probably a good reason for it in my mind. Speaking of, I would hate to live in this ultra-PC world these people are fighting towards. I WANT there to be words that hurt people. I WANT to be able to call someone something awful if I hate them. I want there to be bad things for good things. I want there to be conflict. What the fuck else would we have otherwise? Peace and harmony? How boring would that get?
But my opinion doesn't matter because I'm a cisgendered female living in my own place in a middle class college town with my transgender boyfriend, our four cats, our dog, with our flat screen television, our XBOX 360, our four computers, our comfortable bed, our car, our public transportation, our government assistance, our college education, our two bikes, ectera, ectera.
And you know what? I'm proud of that. Because I suffered for years and struggled through life to have the things I have. So I'm not taking people calling me a spoiled white girl as a slight anymore (not that I did in the first place, but that's what they mean by it). Yeah, I have all these things because I busted my ass for them and I lived in the projects for years, sometimes only have $20 to my name to feed two people for a week, had a mother who was a junkie, was homeless, walked for miles just to look for work, was denied government assistance because I wasn't pregnant, ectera, ectera. Sure, call me a spoiled white girl. I struggled enough to get here.

Date: 2011-09-14 10:08 pm (UTC)what is offensive to someone is highly variable
what is meant to be offensive is also highly variable and doesn't always line up with the former (especially with super sensitive types who think context doesn't matter at all ever)
words are pretty meaningless without context too, whatever the word is
it's quite tiring when someone uses the logic of "well *I* find it offensive thus everyone must cater to me me me me me" when the word is not one that is generally considered offensive
well anyway, bla bla bla wtf people
we need a good macro for this, so we can just post it and walk off

"Say What Now of the Day: A Jewish York College professor came under fire recently for an anti-Semitic statement he made in class.
The hell you say? Listen up: A 22-year-old senior named Sarah Grunfeld complained to local Jewish groups that Professor Cameron Johnston had the audacity to exclaim “all Jews should be sterilized” in his “Self, Culture and Society” class.
Except that, had Grunfeld not tuned Johnston out before leaving the classroom in a huff, she might have heard him say “‘All Jews should be sterilized’…would be an example of an unacceptable and dangerous opinion.”
Luckily, Johnston managed to talk the Jewish community down from their calls to have him fired. The incident was “a very unfortunate misunderstanding,” said Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs rep. Sheldon Goodman.
Grunfeld, however, is not backing down from her claim that Johnston is an anti-Semitic Jew: “The words, ‘Jews should be sterilized’ still came out of his mouth,” she told the Toronto Star, “so regardless of the context I still think that’s pretty serious.”"

Not sure about the crusader variety but I'm sure there are plenty of people who simply watch what they say, not take shit to extremes and then.. OMG move on. Of course, no one even knows they exist because, well, they aren't screaming. Oh but we're reading and watching and silently making decisions about who we're keen on and who we're not. I only say "we" cause I know I can't be the only one out there. :)

Date: 2011-09-15 12:23 pm (UTC)Listen, I can still be all for 'blah' rights and think that some things about it are ridiculous. That's the whole point of having an opinion and a free thinking mind. Just because you use certain words or certain language does not mean you're against a certain type of person, label, or identity.
