Oh boy,, oh boy!

So the drama from FD2 yesterday pretty much blew the fuck up. If you're a member of the community, you know what went down. If not, there's a condensed sort of post on sf_drama for you to catch up on. I can grab caps if people want them, but I don't feel like capping 400+ comments.

The short of it is that a rule was implemented that disallowed any form of sexist/abelist/ectera language. The mod post stating such was comment-locked, no one could put a word in on it. The next post that went up (which was unrelated to the mod post) essentially was 600+ comments in response to the locked mod post. The vast majority of the comments were of the trolling sort, but the overall consensus was that you can't ban [THIS] without banning [THAT] and you may as well ban all words altogether because everyone's going to find offense at something.

A post of 'clarifications' went up that also reached 400+ comments in reply. Recently, the newest post brought things to a close, banning only three words: nigger, retard, and faggot. Funnily enough, this is the first time I've ever actually typed out the n-word. Crazy.

People on FD2 seem to be pleased with this, as much as they can be, so there's no much going on there right now.

What I'm going to complain about is the comments on the sf_drama post.

First, some simple definitions:
fem·i·nism
1 : the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes
2 : organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests

mi·sog·y·ny
1 : a hatred of women

mis·an·dry
1 : a hatred of men

No, by the definition of feminism, it is one for EQUALITY between the sexes, yes? We can all agree on this. Yes, its slant is WOMEN MUST BE EQUAL TO MEN, but it does not, BY DEFINITION, mean that women should be ABOVE men. Anyone can be a feminist, male or female, as long as you want equal rights for both sexes.

Misogyny is, as defined, a hatred of or towards women. Misandry, on the other end of the spectrum, is a hatred of or towards men. We can agree that both these things exist in society. People hate people for a variety of reasons, so we cannot say with absolute certanity that one or the other doesn't exist, correct?

Now, read this:

The fact that these people think that something is an 'imagined opression' is as insulting as people thinking misogyny is an 'imagined opression'. You cannot have one without the other, this is the cardinal rule of the world. You cannot have good without bad, up without down, ectera. It's absolutel ridiculous to think that there's people out there who hate men. I knew a girl who absolutely loathed men, considered them scum on the Earth and had no problem stating such. Would she not be misandristic (I could be making up words at this point, but you know what I mean)?

This kind of mindset is absolutely disgusting and appalling. I won't deny for a moment that misogyny is a problem, that's not the issue here. It's when people get so turned around that they lash out in the same manner as the people/group/mindset that they're fighting against.

You can't have one without the other and equality means EQUAL FOR ALL.

equality for all, and those that are there who say that they hate furries because they're "weird" or what not... hypocritical.

I think it's okay to call a fandom that does appear quite weird from the outside 'weird'. It's not okay to ramble off about how 'all furries are dogfuckers' or 'screw in costumes' or simply have hate for no reason at all. Something has to compel you to hate something else, it can't be a magical emotion that comes into being from nowhere.

But furries are the bottom rung of the geek heirachy, so the fandom should be used to the ~fursecution~ by now.

I can't believe I typed that word out, even in jest.

It's like black people who so truly believe that racism is everywhere that they become racists against whites.

But now instead of a 'race card' we have a 'gender card', which I am going to lovingly dub the 'ace of sand in the vagina'.

If they do they'll just take their hatred out on them, creating a generation of self-loathing men who end up in shitty and/or abusive relationships with hateful women.

And the cycle continues.

Yeah this is just.. enraging. It doesn't matter how privileged one group might be, it shouldn't be acceptable all that does is shift the same kind of wrongful and damaging concepts onto another group. Which of course, isn't the way to improve things.

This is why I feel like if you're going to make fun of something, people should be made fun of equally, and if you're going censor oppressive terms, do it equally. Negative or positive, at least keep it across the board, don't single anyone out, that's just bad for everyone.

Hey look Lilenth brought me up!

I feel so special.

Seriously though, what about 'equality' don't people understand? It is not that goddamn hard to wrap one's mind around.

what kind of idiots get upset over naughty words being used in a snark community

the entire point of the community is to point at people and make fun of them, someone getting their femynyst feelings hurt over misogynist language used in such a community needs to reevaluate their perspective on things

given that a majority of the active posters on such snark communities happen to be women (stereotypes ring true) it doesn't surprise me that such arguments over misandry would develop

the best and only proper way to moderate any sort of snark community is to leave it to its own devices and just ensure it isn't violating the TOS, and to moderate unseen. it's a bloody drama community, moderating it visibly will inevitably cause more drama. and if you own a drama community and find yourself shaken enough by words on the internet to want to shape them, you should probably give said community to someone else since you clearly aren't capable of handling it.

God, "clusterfuck" doesn't even begin to describe that whole... clusterfuck. Good to know that devaluing some people because of how they're made is still A-OK! Stay classy, furries.

I don't think misandry is a problem in a community dominated by males. In society where both sexes are equally represented in the population? Absolutely.. but at a furry con? LOL. Colour me surprised if there's even ten women at small cons :P
