SO. TODAY WAS PRETTY FUCKING AWESOME.

The Hugo/Dan Miraldi and the Albino Winos/Attack Cat concert was tonight and we decided to go up to Cleveland earlier in the afternoon and find something to do. Wednesday is the day that the Natural History Museum and the Art Museum are open late, so we decided on doing that to pass the time and not have to deal with rush hour traffic or getting lost trying to find the venue.

We stopped at Koko's Bakery in Chinatown, though, because we'd heard about it and Tony love pork buns and fresh stuff like that. We'd also seen a lot of great reviews of the place and figured we'd check it out. It's a really nice little shop and they have a nice variety of noms. I got this amazing - I don't know what it was but it had almonds and soft pastry bread and sweet butter and delicious. I also got some Hong Kong tea, which is really just cold milk+sugar+black tea, but I'm always too lazy to make some for myself at home despite it being ~delish~.

After that, we drove up to the clusterfuck that is the area the museums are at. It's really such a pain to get around there.

We went to the Museum of Natural History first and were excite to see a thylacine and an angler! Also, DINOSAURS and scary-big elk skeletons. Also! Naked mole rats, which I think are a staple at all learning/science museum places. They had them at the science center in Seattle, too.

After, we still had an hour or so to spare, so we went to the Museum of Art because admission is free. At first we were a little disappoint because it was kind of difficult to find the galleries we wanted to go to (we ended up in contemporary/modern art at first). It's a bit of a clusterfuck, but I realized the museum was pretty new, so not all the spaces were filled with galleries/collections. Once I noticed that, I wasn't so disappoint. Then I was even LESS disappoint when we found the Romantic/Italian Renaissance paintings and the Medieval section. Also, the hall of armor was amazing and huge and sdhnlkgfhldf so pretty all around. I could have stared at the huge oil paintings for hours, they were so gorgeous and lush.

Cleveland Museum of Art Armor Court

The Armor Hall is amazing, but I have to say the whole museum has a certain aura about it when you're there after dark. It wasn't creepy, but it was something I can't quite put my finger on. I liked it, however.

Apollo and the Muses

These were, oh god. Just amazing. I'm not normally the type of person who goes 'YOU HAVE TO SEE THESE IN PERSON' but...um. Yeah. They're HUGE and they're absolutely gorgeous. The colors are amazing and vivid and just lkghdlkg. Pretty much that.

These were two of my other favorites. I love Romantic art and any artwork where the form is rendered so beautifully and soft. It's not even so much the realism as it is the colors and the depth that's going on in the image. Also, the Cupid is a pimp and I wanted to buy the print of that one in the museum, but it was $20.

Then, we made our way up to Beachland. Neither of us had ever been there before, so it was a new adventure (really, the whole day was a new adventure because we hadn't been to the muesums before, either!). We were surprised that it was so sparsley-filled, but we were also okay with that. It took some time for the bands to set up, so we had some food and drinks while we waited.

Dan Miraldi and the Albino Winos played first and they were really good! I definately suggest people check them out. The lead singer was really laid back and signed the CD we bought from them. Then there was Attack Cat, which we really didn't like at all. I guess I'm just not a fan of two hipsters, a Macbook and a keyboard on stage. Also, I couldn't stand the girl's voice, it's like she was trying too hard to do this ~sultry~ breathy voice and trying WAY too hard to be cute/sexy/tee-hee! and it was just obnoxious.

BUT THEN THERE WAS HUGO AND THAT MADE UP FOR IT.

He (well, I guess 'they', as he did have a band) pretty much played their sampler CD (Old Tyme Religion, 99 Problems, Bread and Butter, Hopelessly Stoned, Wake Alone), but it was A. MAZ. ING. We were also surpsied he did play 99 Problems, we didn't actually expect him to for some reason. But he's fabulous live and even if you've only heard 99 Problems on YouTube, if you get the chance to see him - DO IT. You won't regret it. He's a great, casual performer and he was really chillax.

We waited around after the show to see if he'd sign out sampler and poster (we also both bought shirts - it was only $10 for the bundle!). We were seriously the only people who stuck around and he came out and chatted with us, signed out stuff, thanked us for coming and all that. It was pretty awesome.

Also, we were shocked to discover he has a British accent. We'd never heard him speak on anything before, so we'd only heard his singing voice. But it was a pleasant surprise! But it was really awesome that he did come out and have a chat.

So, yes. Awesome awesome concert. Would go again. :D

I also scored the perfect skirt for the Rasputina concert at the vintage shop This Way Out downstairs from the Beachland. It's floofy and beigh/cream and lkghdlfg I was pretty stoked when I found it. Tony also found a shrimp tie clip. Yes. A shrimp tie clip. It's pretty classy. At the natural history museum, I got a cute fish/goldfish ocarina necklace. But it's really less an ocarina than it is a simple whistle. But it's cute, so that's really all I was aiming for.

I'd love to go again. Since we had to be somewhere in an hour or so, we didn't get to really take in everything as much as I'd have liked, but we did go through all the collections in the Contemporary and Renaissance galleries.
