Now, see, I don't actively go searching for Supernatural drama. I generally keep clear of the fandom at large because, quite frankly, it's fucking batshit crazy and includes wincest which is looked down upon be even the actors (Jensen was once asked about it at a convention and was visibly DO NOT WANT in regards to talking about it).

See, Supernatural does a lot of pretty hilarious nods to the fandom. The cool kids think this is great because, HEY KRIPKE IS RECOGNIZING OUR EXISTENCE. The rest of the fandom (read: the crazies) get their panties in a twist because, OH GOLLY GEE, SOMEONE'S TALKING ABOUT MY FETISH (read: brotherly incest between to brothers who IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN BETWEEN AND ARE VERY MUCH HETEROSEXUAL EVEN DESPITE SAM'S FOPPISH HAIr).

Sometimes, however, I get some SPN drama that comes in through another journal I'm watching (or, through [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt or [livejournal.com profile] ontd_spnparty).

Tonight, it was this:
http://counteragent.livejournal.com/68028.html

Wherein someone posts a comic they made about a wife and mother who writes Supernatural fanfic, then watches the S5 premiere (wherein there is a fan who writes 'wincest'; there's also a long story on how the series can exist inside of the series itself, but that's not the point here) and her husband freaks out because that's what she 'does online'. A fight between the couple ensues (OVER FANFIC, I can only assume) and...

THE HUSBAND

LEAVES HER

Quite frankly, if it wasn't made to rile up sympathy and baww, it'd be hilarious. Hell, I LAUGHED when I read it because I thought that was the point.

Then I got to the comments and it's a whole lot of 'OH GOD THIS IS HEARTBREAKING' and 'I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'D DO IF MY HUSBAND/FAMILY/WHATEVER FOUND OUT WHAT I WRITE'. Seriously, read the comments. They're amazing.

WELP

Maybe that's because I could win money on betting 80% of the commenters write 'wincest' and, of course, should be ashamed of such because IT'S FUCKING RETARDED.

All I can think of is furries and THEIR persecution complexes over 'coming out of the closet' about the fandom. It's the same goddamn exact thing, just with a TV show.

UGH. FUCKING FANDOM RUINS EVERYTHING.

Also, rolling my eyes dramatically at everyone going OMG THE ART IS SOOOOOO GOOD. Uh, kids, it looks like someone traced over some photos. Seriously. It's not good. It's lumpy at best.

Some choice quotes from the comments:

This is a wonderful comic and resonated strongly with me as a fan, a parent and a partner. The subject resonates widely throughout fandom, I would guess. Certainly for me, as I am not a Supernatural fan, but I feel nervous about any breach of the fourth wall, however innocuous (my fandom has a famous incident of an interviewer showing one of the creators some slash and asking him what he thought of it - back in the 90s!).

Oh, wow. This is a very powerful reminder of why so many fans have to keep their fannishness under the radar. I'm very lucky my husband accepts my fannishness, and I know that's a huge luxury a lot of fans just don't have.

But, once was enough. It was snarky the first time around. Everything they've done after that point has been insulting and unfunny. I absolutely hate the fourth-wall breaking, because WE are the people who support them the most. The fans. I couldn't stand the convention episode. Why do they feel it necessary to continually belittle their staunchest supporters?

Brilliant and painful. Damn! Kripke. I knew dropping the forth wall irked me (always has), and not so much for "outing" fans (though that's an excellent point), but for miss-representation. Actually I was moaning about this very thing on my journal recently... and sited Becky's writing as a major sticking point.

Okay kids, you know what? If Kripke wanted to make a list of all the wincest writers and, on the series finale, put them in the credits as 'THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS' he could do that. You know why? Because he's not a fucking fan. He's the CREATOR. And the creator can do whatever the creator wants with his creation. He wants to poke fun at the fans for writing something that weirds him the fuck out? So be it.

Also, if Sam and Dean, upon discovering an online fandom based around a supposedly fictional book series about their life just sat back and went 'huh, that's not so weird' it would be COMPLETELY OUT OF CHARACTER. The way they reacted to 'wincest' is the exact way anyone with a sibling would upon finding out someone was writing bad sexfic about them.

FUCKING WEIRDED OUT

Goddamn.

I'd also put money on people like this being the same ones who would ABSOLUTELY FLIP SHIT if they found out their hubby was looking at porn online or something.

Fans like that are the reason I keep to myself with my interests, or at least don't share it outside my tiny handful of equally durpy friends.

I really lulzed at the 'outing a fellow fan' thing. What the fuck is that shit?

That shit is exactly why they need to be ridiculed. Tough skins or gtfo.
