Stuff and WOW, WHAT A FREAKING DAY.
Jun. 3rd, 2005 09:30 pmOkay, so. This morning me and
keeperofdreams (TJ) wake up to find some blood on the cage which houses our four boy ratties Raku, Vlad, Zephyr and Chernobyl. Recognizing that this IS blood and NOT porphyrin, we immediately go about checking all the beasties in the cage for bites or cuts or whatever, we come across Chernobyl, who seems to have blood around his ear and he's bleeding a bit from his nose. The other three are fine, if not a little annoyed by the sudden wake up call.
I take Chernobyl out to check him out, trying to figure out where this blood came from on his ear. He's also gurgling and making noises like there's fluid in his lungs. He doesn't have a respiratory infection, as this just sprung up since, like 2AM this morning. As he's cleaning himself in the extra tank we have, TJ points out that's he's BLEEDING FROM HIS EAR. Oh shit, not good. I immediately jump up and call the vet. The soonest they can get us in is 2PM. Okay, okay, but it's still only 12PM. We clean Chernobyl up, give him some food and water (he only wound up earing a tiny bit of carrot) and place him in the travel cage. He shuffles about, tries to escape a few times, and eventually tires of that and lays down.
Now, a quick backstory. Chernobyl had an injury a few months ago, when he was much smaller. He squeezed through the bars of his cage and ended up with a tilt. We kept an eye on him and he went right back to his business. Eating, drinking properly. Never showed any signs of pain or discomfort. He was a happy rattie who was a little sideways. About a month ago, he's gotten bigger, but his the eye on his tilt side seems to be squinty. Again, we keep an eye on him and he appears to be fine. I make a note to get some money together to take him and another of our rats to the vet as soon as possible. And then, this morning, the above happens.
Eventually, 2PM rolls around and we're at the vet. Fill out papers, yadayadayada. Vet comes in, checks him out, asks questions, the usual. We're expecting the worse. Brain tumor, nerves, something really bad. We're worried he'll have to be put down. We're not expecting the vet to tell us to give him antibiotics (Baytril, which we had at home anyhow. Although that saved on the vet bill, since we informed the vet that we knew the general doseage to give the rats and such.).
Last I checked, bleeding from the ear and nose ISN'T a good thing. I was expecting, like, an x-ray or something. I've never heard of this happening, and I KNOW it's from the previous injury.
However, I'm glad that he's still with us. And I hope the antibiotics DO help him.
Past that, picked up a nice HP Deskjet 3820 from The Village for $6. The ink cartidges are a little finicky, and I need to buy new ones, but it works! Woo! Also got some beads for cheap at Goodwill. Gotta start on commissions. Blaaaarg.
